Frequently Asked Questions

❓ Is acupuncture really covered?

🇺🇸 Absolutely — under the VA Community Care network, acupuncture is a covered benefit for many conditions like pain and musculoskeletal issues.

❓ Do I need a new referral?

🇺🇸 Yes, an active VA Community Care referral for acupuncture is required.

❓ What if I don’t have a referral yet?

🇺🇸 Contact your VA provider to request acupuncture and ask about Community Care eligibility.

❓Can I choose my own acupuncturist?

🇺🇸 You can request a specific provider, but they must be an authorized member of the VA Community Care Network (managed by Optum in the eastern/central US or TriWest in the west).

❓Is there any cost to me?

🇺🇸 For authorized community care, veterans typically pay nothing at the time of service. Billing is handled directly between the provider and the VA.

❓How many sessions are covered?

🇺🇸 A standard authorization often includes 12 sessions within a two-month period. If the treatment is effective, your provider can request a "continuation of care" for additional visits.
